The Evolution of Political Speech.

The November monthly lunch webinar will be extra special.  The program will start with a virtual tour of the Springfield Art Museum’s exhibit entitled This & That: Cartoons by Bob Palmer.  Palmer was the father of SMBA Past President Rob Palmer and was Springfield’s longest-working cartoonist, creating over 10,000 political cartoons for the Springfield News-Leader beginning in April 1953 through July 1991. Palmer was the last local cartoonist. His political cartoons poked fun at everyone from Springfield City Council members to Presidents Nixon and Reagan and covered issues ranging from peace negotiations in the Middle East to Springfield’s landfill concerns.  More about the exhibit at this link.

Following the virtual tour, we will hear from Lyrissa Lidsky, Dean of Mizzou Law and prominent Media Law scholar. Dean Lidsky is co-reporter on the Restatement of Defamation and Privacy, co-author of a leading Media Law casebook, a First Amendment casebook, and a reference book on press freedom and has published dozens of articles, culminating in her recent article in California Law Review titled Considering the Context of Online Threats. Her work on anonymous speech has been cited by a number of state supreme courts and the highest courts of Canada and Hong Kong.

Each program in the SMBA Monthly CLE series qualifies for 1 MoCLE.
