Cybersecurity threats grow each day. Lawyers should become educated regarding regulations, compliance, policies, laws, and protocols regarding storing and sharing private information. Attorneys should understand how to protect their clients’ data in both the public and private sectors. As the number of hacking incidents skyrocket questions about consumer rights have prompted regulatory action. Europe and California recently passed laws protecting online privacy.https://nyti.ms/2OFnSrl

According to the American Bar Association (ABA),Rule 1.6, section (c), “A lawyer shall make reasonable efforts to prevent the inadvertent or unauthorized disclosure of, or unauthorized access to, information relating to the representation of the client.”

As our society becomes more connected and more dependent on information systems, the need to secure our nation’s information systems has never been higher. This talk will cover some of the recent developments in the ongoing global cyber war, and share specific steps that you can take to protect yourself personally, your firm and your clients.

Presented by Dr. Shannon McMurtrey, Director of Cybersecurity, Drury University. Dr. McMurtrey has the knowledge and skills to help attorneys protect their clients and themselves while also opening up potential new areas of practice (e.g. data & privacy advising, post-breach class action suits, FTC investigations, management of breaches, handling issues related to emerging technologies like AI and/or blockchain).
