The Springfield Bar/ Magna Carta social media contest was a huge success, with a total of 83 local students participating. The contest was held in conjunction with Magna Carta: Enduring Legacy, 1215-2015, an exhibit brought to the state of Missouri by the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Foundation and hosted at the Duane Meyer Library at Missouri State University for two weeks in October. The contest was designed to encourage the students to not just view the panels, but to give thought to the importance of rule of law and how Magna Carta applies to their lives, 800 years later. The hashtags #MagnaCartaOnFleek & #RuleOfLawRocks provided a venue for them to express those thoughts creatively. (gallery of entries)
The 118 posts included entries that inspired, amused and on a couple of occasions, confused. Daily winning tweets received Moxie passes with entries like #MagnaCartaOnFleek because I can't get thrown in prison for singing and dancing all of the time @adeline_rae and #MagnaCartaOnFleek because it shaped many country's legacies @Manuel1999.
The first place winner, Joseph Essman composed a short essay linked here. Second place, Lane Burdette was a frequent tweeter, her many clever entries including #RuleOfLawRocks because no one is above the law #ExceptBeyonce.. Essman and Burdette, both students at Central High School, attended the November lunch of the Springfield Bar where they were treated to lunch while members of the bar were treated to Joseph reading his entry.
