Game Five – May 2, 6:00 pm, Mother’s Brewing Company Back Yard

Greene County Prosecutor - Dragon Slayers v Neale Newman Bad News Barristers

The Neale Newman Barristers had bad news for the GCPA Dragon Slayers in the top of the first inning – scoring 9 runs.  The Barristers batting order was Gunnar Johanson, Gus Scott, Lilly Sweeney, Nathan Rogers and Kirsten Poppen.  Every single team member scored at least one run. Johanson had a particularly good inning with three at bats resulting in two triples and a double.  Rogers had a triple and a double and Scott had the most dramatic at bats – as the first to get on base with the new hit-by-pitch rule  followed by a double and a triple into the tree.

In the bottom of the first with Bad News Barristers’ Gus Scott pitching, Zack McFarland hit a resounding triple into the tree followed by a double by Dan Patterson and a triple by Jacqueline Ledezma-Ruelas.

The inning ended with Bad News Barristers ahead 9-2.

In the top of the second with Patterson pitching the Dragonslayers made short work of the half inning starting with Rogers striking out.  Poppen followed with a hit caught by Patterson.  Johanson managed a triple-to-the-little-tree, followed by Scott’s pop fly caught by McFarland.

In the bottom of the second, with Scott pitching, the Bad News Barristers held the Dragonslayers at bay with a couple of quick strike outs followed by a triple-into-the-landscape-feature by McFarland.  The inning ended with a Patterson pop fly caught by Sweeney and the score remaining 9-3.

The third inning was a little more exciting and controversial.  Sweeney, at bat for the Barristers, hit the ball which was more or less cleanly caught by Patterson. The controversial call turned on the fact that Patterson, coming directly from the office, was running as fast as possible while wearing slippery dress shoes. Rogers then blast a hit into the big tree.  As it was descending like a Plinko game McFarland miraculously caught it.  Poppen walked and Johanson got a triple before the end of the half inning.

The Dragonslayers got some momentum in the bottom of the third.  Every batter in their line-up of Jacqueline Ledezma-Ruelas, Josh Harrell, Zack McFarland, and Dan Patterson got on base and scored at least once and they added 5 to their score count – the inning ending with a much closer game of Bad News Barristers 10, Dragonslayers 7

The fourth inning was bad news for the Barristers.  They only managed to add one run in the top of the inning with a triple by Rogers and single by Johanson.   The Dragonslayers upped the ante in the bottom of the fourth with McFarland and Ledezma-Ruelas both driving hit-the-fence triples, plus another triple by McFarland and one by Patterson.  The Dragonslayers ended the inning with four more one, tied game Barristers 11, Dragonslayers 11.

The top of the fifth was highlighted by Patterson’s curveball pitches, an epic catch by McFarland and Sweeney being the only Barrister to make it in base. The bottom of the fifth highlights were a Patterson hit over the fence- in foul territory.  No runs in the fifth so you know what that means!  Extra innings.

Inauspicious start to the sixth for the Barristers with a couple strike outs.  Then Rogers hit a double, Poppen a single and in the most exciting moment of the evening, Johanson gunned an over-the-fence home run – three more runs for the Barristers.  In the bottom of the sixth the Dragonslayers came on strong.  McFarland tallied two triples in his at bats and Ledezma-Ruelas hit a triple-into-the landscaping.  Despite their efforts the inning, and game, ended with the Neale Newman Bad News Barristers Slaying the GCPA Dragons in the most exciting match up of the season.

Final Score Bad News Barristers 14, Dragon Slayers 13.
