Recap and Photos - Salute to New Judges

The Salute to New Judges of the 31^st Circuit was held November 15, 2023 at Hickory Hills Country Club with more than 200 attending.  (link to program)

This event took place in lieu of the annual SMBA Law Day celebration and 2023 Law Day Chair, Ryan Frazier welcomed the attendees, introduced the numerous judges and elected officials present and thanked the sponsors. (Link to sponsor list)

The highlight of the Salute was the “gentle roasting” of the new judges and commissioners.  Each of the nine newcomers was introduced (with no opportunity to rebut) by one of the longer-tenured judicial officers.  The presenters shared interesting and irrelevant facts about the newcomers.  The comments were intended to be humorous, and most were…    Special commendation to Judge Carrier who managed to be both brief and very funny and to Judge Hosmer who had the entire room doubled over with laughter.  (Link to Facebook photo album)

The Salute culminated with the presentation of the annual SMBA awards.  The Equal Access to Justice Award which honors pro bono service was presented to Ty Harden.  The Liberty Bell Award went to Dr. Fred McQueary and Kim Hancock for their service on the 31^st Circuit Judicial Commission.  The Distinguished Attorney Award went to Clif Smart, who closed the program with compelling remarks about the outstanding lawyers he has had the privilege to work with throughout his career.
