June 11, 2024 Recap
5:30 Bad News Barristers (Neale Newman) v McGlovens (Kutak)
6:15 BARbarians (Lowther Johnson) v Prior and Persistents (Criminal Defense Cohort)
7:00 Dragonslayers (GC Prosecutors) v Sluggers (Hall Ansley
7:45 Court Jesters (Carnahan Evans) v Motion to Strike (CoxHealth and Friends)
The evenings are heating up and so is the competition. Umpires Judge Wichmer and Stuart Huffman are to be commended for their service and tolerance!
The 5:30 game matched Bad News Barristers v McGlovens. The actual barristers of Neale Newman were apparently still at their desks at the 5:30 start time and dispatched their delightful cadre of summer associates to face a team comprised of two former D-1 baseball players. Memorable plays included home runs by McGloven's Joseph Reid and Taylor White and a pop fly caught by NN summer associate Cecilia Bailey - because she and her teammates were just so excited about it. No great surprise that Kutak’s McGlovens won – but the summer associates had the most fun.

McGlovens 13
Next up Lowther Johnson’s BARbarians beat Prior and Persistent (Cohort of Criminal Defense Attorneys). Highlights included Stacie Bilyeu’s loud and exceptional big bird socks coordinating with her loud and insistent "appeals" to the Commissioner of Wiffle Ball. Apparently the Commissioner incorrectly credited the opposing team with a run in the bottom of the first. Bilyeu won the appeal for her team but the P&Ps lost the game.

BARbarians 6
The 7:00 game was the upset of the season. 2023 Champs Hall Ansley Sluggers faced the Greene County Prosecutor Dragonslayers. The Sluggers didn’t bargain for Dan Patterson’s crazy curve ball and some A+ fielding by APA Katelynn Frazier (catch and barrel roll) and some A for effort fielding by Patterson and Josh Harrel in the top of the third. Rumor has it the Sluggers are already planning their comeback in 2025.

Dragonslayers 3
Slow start in the final game of the night with Carnahan Evans Court Jesters v. Motion to Strike (CoxHealth and friends) ending the first inning zero zero. Dramatic change in the top of the second with the Jesters scoring eight fueled by Andy Peebles grand slam home run. In the bottom of the second Bryan Wade’s home run put Motion to Strike on the board. In the third inning the Jesters got 5 more runs and MTS did some catching up with seven. Also in the third inning -the award for “commendable play of the evening” goes to Jay Preston. Preston passed on taking a hit by pitch base and his gallantry was rewarded when he hit a grand slam home run with the next pitch. Also commendable - Motion to Strike (CoxHealth and friends) for their predominately female team with Captain Danielle Reid and pitcher/ five tool player Abby Craigmyle.
Court Jesters 20
Motion to Strike 8
2024 SMBA Wiffle Ball started with 16 teams and is now down to eight. June 18 all eight remaining teams will play in the semi-finals.
