Project Goal: In 2007 the SMBF leadership wanted to devise a way to help the burgeoning Hispanic immigrant population in Southwest Missouri by providing information to promote understanding of legal rights and responsibilities. The goal was to help prevent the abuse by unscrupulous Notarios and others selling “legal advice” to recent immigrants who are particularly vulnerable to being scammed due to language and cultural barriers.
Project Description: The SMBF conducted bilingual public forums on immigration, employment and general law. Forums were held in conjunction with seminars for business and community leaders on complementary topics through the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce. In 2008 Sus Derechos: Your Rights received a national award for excellence in public service programming by Lexis Nexis and NABE.
Project Partners: Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, OTC, Grupo Latino Americano, Hispanic Initiatives of Missouri State University.
