4:00 - Ethics (Anti-Bias) Dred Scott, Milly Sawyers and Freedom Suits - Lessons Learned from Missouri Legal History, Dr. Marlin Barber Bio: Dr. Marlin Christopher Barber Senior Instructor Department of History Missouri State University I have been at Missouri State since the fall of 2012 where I have taught courses on United States and Missouri history. I also teach courses on enslavement in the Atlantic World, Black leaders and movements in American history, and research and writing methods classes. I have published articles entitled “’Fountains of Joy’: Alcohol Culture and Hospitality in Nineteenth Century Missouri” and “A People Capable of Self Support: Black Autonomy and Community Building through Schools in Kentucky during Reconstruction.” I also recently had an edited volume entitled Changing Landscapes in the Atlantic World: Cultures, Societies, Exchanges, and Conflict from 1492 to 1877 (2020) published. My dissertation examined the nature of citizenship as it applied to Black Americans under the law in Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas. My academic interests are early American and nineteenth century American history. Black American history and the intersection of Black culture, society, and politics. The Upper-South. I am an native Missourian from Cape Girardeau, MO. I hold a Ph.D. in history from the University of Missouri; A Master of Arts in history from the University of Houston – Clear Lake; A Master of Science in Mass Communication from Murray State University; and a Bachelor of Arts from Murray State University. |
