Speaker: Nancy Levit, Professor of Law, University of Missouri-Kansas City
Associate Dean Nancy Levit will address the different meanings of happiness and the types of activities that make people happy. She will offer survey results about how the practice of law compares to other careers along various dimensions of job satisfaction. She will provide some tools in a toolbox of happiness—the things that make people more or less happy in their work—as well as suggestions for law firms to increase the satisfaction for their lawyers and individual lawyers to increase their own levels of satisfaction. She will highlight some of the myths and some of the surprising findings from the happiness literature in psychology, as well as new information from cognitive neuroscience about becoming happier.
Professor Levit’s scholarship is principally in the areas of employment discrimination, legal pedagogy, constitutional law, jurisprudence, torts, and feminist legal theory. Her book with Doug Linder, The Happy Lawyer: Making a Good Life in the Law, was published by Oxford University Press in 2010. Their sequel, The Good Lawyer: Seeking Quality in the Practice of Law, was published by Oxford in 2015
Moderated by Lynsey Coffey, Lowther Johnson, Attorneys at Law
